You use valves to play notes on a trumpet, the different combinations are called fingerings. The valves work by dropping the pitch of a note, the first valve lowers it by a whole step, the second by a half step, and the third by a minor third. Because of that, some notes have different fingerings, but people almost always use one fingering for a note because the tone is better with certain fingerings.
